Louis Tveter and Arlene Flaskerud

Janelle and Harlan live in Longmont, CO. David Marlin married Betty Rausch. They had 2 children: Victoria Diane and Kristina Kay. They divorced. David then married Marcella Vick (b. 18 Jul 1952) 19 Aug 1972. They have 3 children: Rachelle Marie, Bridget Dawn and Derrick Martin. David worked on the home farm for some years. Marcella works for the phone company and was just transferred to the Minneapolis area. Lou Ann married John Bremer on 23 Jan 1976. They had twins Leah Corissa and Lisa Corissa and Sean Kiel. Lou Ann and John live in Decorah.

Arlene has moved into Decorah.

Tveter, Martin and Marit (Hamre)

Marit L. Hamre (b. 19 Jul 1885 - d. 11 Aug 1973) was the 4th child of Lars H. and Berit J. Hamre. She was born in Valdres, Norway and died in Decorah. Martin H. Tveter was born 1 Jun 1869 in Solor, Norway and died 3 Apr 1937 in Decorah. While in Norway Marit took care of the cows on the saeter during the summers and fed and milked them at home during the winters. She played guitar and sang. One story told is that Marit wanted to go to

a dance with brother Ole and he wouldn’t go if Marit tagged along. Her mother made Marit stay home.

Her brother Lars in Decorah showed her photo to Martin Tveter who was renting the Dibbs farm between Decorah and Ridgeway. (His parents were keeping house for him.) Marit was beautiful with dark wavy hair and twinkling brown eyes. Marit and Martin corresponded. He sent passage money and directions for Marit to come to America. Marit came on the Empress of Ireland to Ellis Island in 1907. She stayed with Jake and Anna and did housework in the Decorah area. Marit finally said “yes” and they were married at the Tveter farm 21 Jan 1910.

Relatives of Martin’s in Colorado urged them to move there. Martin and Marit homesteaded at Kit Carson about 100 miles due east of Colorado Springs in the valley of Big Sandy Creek, a long tributary of the Arkansas River. Many were striking oil there. Martin did NOT! Farming was hay, grain and cattle. Martin preferred Iowa farming. The family returned in 1916 with the addition of daughter Esther born in 1914. They farmed near Ridgeway NW of the Madison Lutheran Church with Ole and Aagaat Tveter. Marit learned to drive a car. This was a surprise to me. Most women I knew did not drive.

Martin and Marit had 2 children: Esther and Louis. Esther Beatrice (Stoddard) was born 20 Aug 1914. (See separate articlel. Louis Melvin was born 20 Jul 1921 and died 29 Nov 1991. (See separate article).

Martin and Marit are buried at Madison Lutheran Church Cemetery.

Twedt, Henry and Alice (Foss)

(Alice (Foss) Twedt)

Alice Sophia Charlotte Foss Twedt was born 14 Feb 1909 near Calmar, IA. Her parents were Nels Andreas and Caroline (Borlaug) Foss. Nels Foss was born in Norway and came to America as a teenager. Nels and Caroline were married in 1883.

Alice's maternal grandparents, Elland Olson and Martha (Hanson) Borlaug were chased by the Indians from Sioux City to Vermillion, SD. When they got to Vermillion they were chased by the Indians a second time. Elland and Martha homesteaded near both Sioux City and Vermillion. Later they moved to Calmar.

Alice attended a country school through the third grade. She then attended the Calmar Public School where she graduated from high school. After high school she attended nurses’ school at the Gundersen Hospital in LaCrosse, Wl. After receiving her nursing diploma, she attended the College of Swedish Massage and Hydro Therapy in Chicago. She graduated in 1939. Alice worked as a nurse in rural areas until she married in 1941.

On 19 Nov 1941 Alice married Henry Arthur Twedt at the Calmar Lutheran Parsonage, Calmar. Henry was born 1 Oct 1898 in Calmar. His parents were Eric and Bertha (Bjostad) Twedt. Both Eric and Bertha were born in Norway. Henry was a meat cutter and sausage maker at Wesselman’s Market in Calmar. Henry and Alice were the parents of 2 sons: Carol Val Dean and Dean Earl.
